Ubuntu on my Dell Latitude D630

Abstract

This document show some interesting details of my Dell Latitude D630. I'm happily running Ubuntu 7.10 on this nice laptop PC.

1. Introduction

I have a Dell Latitude D630 laptop PC at work. I installed the AMD64 version of Ubuntu 7.10 using the Alternate Install CD by following my own instructions. Everything except sound card was working out-of-the-box in Ubuntu 7.10, and I assume these will be fixed in Ubuntu 8.04.

cat /proc/asound/devices

  2:        : timer
  3:        : sequencer

To fix the sound issues in Ubuntu 7.10, install linux-backports-modules and modify /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base to include the setting for Intel HD Audio controller.

sudo aptitude install linux-backports-modules
sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m42

After reboot you should be able to see all HD Audio components.
